Between coronavirus and cold and flu season being among us, let’s talk about germs and helpful tips to avoid getting sick. I can admit to being both a clean freak and a bit of germaphobe so here are a few things I do day-to-day that you might find helpful to think about.

The Basics

-Wash your hands often and for at least 20 seconds with antibacterial soap. Sing the alphabet in your head to make the 20 seconds go by quicker.

-All week you have been hearing to not touch your face. Ladies, get out those headbands and ponytails so you don’t find yourself playing with your hair and face throughout the day. Grab some basic headbands: here

-Avoid public door handles. Use your sleeve, the handicap button or your foot to hold the door open instead of touching high traffic handles. The same goes with escalator/stair railings, public transit handles, etc.

-When pushing elevator buttons use your elbow instead of your finger tips.

-Sanitize your cell phone throughout the day. Especially after setting it down at the gym, restaurant tabletops, waiting rooms, etc. These wipes are safe to use on electronics such as your phones, headphones, computer.

-Sneeze and cough into your elbow instead of your hands. If someone around you sneezes or coughs try to stay a several feet away from them for 30 seconds.

-Restrooms: Going back to not touching public handles. Use a paper towel to turn the faucet off and on, to open and close the door into the stall and the door the exit.

-Remove your shoes when entering your home. Spray the soles with Lysol before putting them back in your closet or walking through your home.

-Upon coming home after sitting in Ubers, restaurants, airports, public transit, etc remove your street clothes and put on comfy clothes. Now you have an excuse to get right into sweatpants and you aren’t spreading germs around the house.

Sanitizer

-Keep spray sanitizer in your purse to mist items such as car keys, public seating, arm rests, etc. Shop: here

-Sanitizer wipes to when flying for airplane seats, tray tables, seat belts, etc. Shop: here

-Hand sanitizers are your best friend in this day and age. My favorite is the Purell with Moisturizer and Vitamin E. It won’t leave your hands feeling sticky and has a light, fresh scent.

Pets

-Wipe your pet’s paws and nose after walks with these anti-bacterial wipes.

Surfaces

-When dining out try to keep your silverware on a napkin or plate instead of directly on the table.

-Don’t forget to disinfect the high traffic areas in your home such as door knobs, faucets, refrigerator handles, soap dispensers, light switches, etc.
